Pretty interesting topic.
I think the economy had quite a bit to do with the turnout this year. More people were pencilled in to come but didn't make it for one reason or another. I would have thought 75 cars would have been more realistic goal for this past reunion instead of the 46 to 48 that showed up.
Personally I tried to focus on just the Re-union this year, and didn't spend any time in the swap or much in the show field and I still didn't even manage to talk to all the guys that brought cars. I was pretty disappointed not to be able to at the very least to put more faces with names.
I did however get to meet a few of the guys for the first time and have some good conversations but at the same time you always seem rushed.
Some of the best moments were actually at the Project Six Pack unveiling and the Friday night BBQ held at the campgrounds by Kevin and Gary and attended by a group of the guys. I would have like to have spent some more time with the NY/NJ guys but I missed out.
Back on topic....I think by holding the Re-Union every 4 to 5 years you ideally end up with the largest mixture of cars from across the country. It gives people something to aim for. Having said that we may be missing out on other great shows and get togethers just because we haven't tried. I don't think we should be afraid to fail. I also firmly believe if we could get more people involved in the setting up the show itself, the better the result would be.
I would really like to try something new maybe in the summer of 2011 in Michigan and tag into another event such as a FAST race or Woodward Cruise, Walter P Chrysler etc... and see how that goes....maybe keep the 5 year Re-union at Carlisle cause they treat us soo well but have some some smaller grass roots events where there are less distractions and we could put some more focus on the cars and the people who enjoy them.
Last comment I have is that I am always surprised in how many people I meet that think their Lift Off Hood car isn't worthy of bringing to a show and that we as a group would not accept them or their cars. I also have heard that they thought they had to be part of this Forum or the Registry to take part. They get the impression that a bunch of white gloved guys are going to be all over their cars judging every little thing. Somehow we need to change this perception. How I have no idea but it would be nice if more people felt welcomed in general.
Next time I will have to lead by example and bring my bucket of bolts
