Plated, Painted or Natural
04/06/09 at 09:35:56

I did a big search on Moparts, looking to find more info on how each part is finished. As I will be restoring all components in the next couple of months, I 'd like to have a list of all these parts and how they are finished. Also, what flatness of black on each painted part.

Since I'm out here in the country, I still only have Dial-up access, so waiting for pics is painful at times.
I'd like to just have a running list that I could print off and staple on my wall in the shop.

I'll begin and please just add to the list (or correct):

Front backing plates............
Rear backing plates.............
Dana housing.....................
Lower control arms..............Cosmoline
Upper control arms..............
Rear springs.......................
Sway bar..........................
Sway bar brackets..............
Sway bar links....................
Shocks..............................Black
Master cylinder...................Natural
Master cylinder cover...........
Master cyl backing plate.......

continue.........

Scott, I posted a Plating Guide that was from an article that Frank Badalson did.  It was instrumental in all the plating for my car.
It is in the Archives section here: http://a12mopar.com/yabb/YaBB.pl?num=1209002197/0#0

Just for starters, the front and rear backing plates, shock mounts, front leaf spring hangers, transmission crossmember bolts are all Zinc Phosphate.
It would be nice to have a checklist or chart for each part though. Maybe that can be another Excel spreadsheet I can do. Cool

Brake back plates are Zinc Phosphate as stated.  Not very durable.

Dana Housing is Semi Gloss black apx 33%.  DP-90 a very close match.

LCA's, natural, dipped in cosmoline just below the ball joint eye.  (at some time, some were dipped in black)

UCA's, natural or sometimes 40% black.  (miner were natural)

Springs are natural with latex paint daub marks.

Sway bar was natural, but had a heat treat hue do to the tempering process.

Sway bar brackes were dipped in 33 % black.  zinc or clear bolts.

Master cylinder is natural

M/C cover was gold cad, or sometimes silver cad.

M/C clamp/bolt were black phosphate.

M/C back plate was gloss black.

Info taken from "panning for Gold" article done by Roger Gibson in Mopar Action magazine.

Shocks, use Krylon 1613.

Trans cross member was dipped in gloss black as well as torsion bars.

Mike:

How do you know if the corrections are correct? There are several expert articles ala Roger Gibson in Mopar Action, etc. We could end up with egg on our face here? Let's include photos of everything.

Im in the process of having bolts, nuts, latches, etc done.  I'm derusting some of the stuff myself, and I sent the part off to Dynamic Restoration for the plating. He's shipped them back, but I havn't got them yet.

here is a link on my suspension de-rusting as well as latches and the products I used.

I'll post some pics of the parts when they come in.

Rear could also be painted with Eastwood underhood black (I like it because it's glossy but not too glossy). I think that's what I used on mine. Pits are optional... Winkbut axle tubes probably should be smooth.

Another
Natural (NOS) u-bolts and hardware (you could clear coat with satin clear), painted shock plates and I used Eastwood zinc phosphate to give the springs and backing plates a natural unpainted but blackish look

I used Eastwood's zinc phosphate on sway bar too and brackets are powder coated gloss black and attaching bolts and end links were zinc phosphate purchased from Frank Badalson. The strut bushing retainers are silver cad. I did my upper control arms in semi-flat black. Struts are natural steel more silver than blackened. Let's see more photos...anyone?

Scott,

From what I was able to gather springs were natural up until 69 when they changed to black (heat treating?). Totally Auto did my springs and they were finished in a black satin (lower sheen then semi gloss but not quite flat).

Also, I have a few detailing, plating and general finishing articles, similar to what JD was referring to. I'm sure Mike R and others have them also from our earlier days. If they need to be posted again, either here on this thread or in the arc-jives, let me know.

BTW, we expect pics of your efforts from time to time.  Cool
